.tmp) Dear
Katherine
This
month, the League of Women Voters of Westwood
& Walpole will be undergoing a large publicity
effort to increase membership, re-brand our image,
and help people understand who we are as a group.
The month of October will bring many
issues to the forefront of our lives as well.
Westwood will be hosting a series of informational
sessions regarding Race and Place, our Nation will
continually be debating healthcare, and our
Massachusetts League will be hosting a series of
U.S. Senate Candidate Forums. I'd
like each and every one of you to get involved, by
showing your passion for government and civics by
attending our Board of Director's Meeting, held on
Monday, October 26, 2009 at 34 Magaletta Drive in
Westwood, MA 02090, starting at 7:30 PM. Here, you
will meet like-minded people who have a passion
for the aforementioned issues, who can provide you
with more information, and powerful tools that
will enhance your influence within our
Commonwealth. Best Wishes, Greg
Agnew President
Westwood/Walpole League
of Women Voters

Protecting
Our Health from Toxics in Our Everyday Lives

7:30 PM - 9:30
PM
Westwood Library
Downstairs Meeting Room
Changing the
rules of the game: getting the toxic chemicals out
of our everyday lives.
More than one
third of the U.S. population is suffering from a
range of chronic diseases and disorders, including
cancers, asthma, autism, obesity, learning
disabilities, endometriosis, Parkinson's disease
and others. Scientific evidence increasingly
indicates that many of these illnesses could be
prevented by reducing our exposure to toxic
chemicals. Unfortunately, too many of the
products that we use in our everyday lives are
made from toxic chemicals that get into our
bodies, even though safer alternatives are
available. It can be overwhelming to learn
all this information, and it can feel like as a
conscientious shopper you need to bring a
chemistry textbook to the store to keep your
family safe! But this shouldn't be
necessary. By teaming together, we can
change the rules of the game on toxic chemicals
and make safer products the norm. Come find out
how.
Phoebe Joseph, organizer of this event,
suggests you read the Newsweek Sept. 21, 2009
issue, page 57 under Health Environment entitled
"Early Exposure to Common Chemicals May Be
Programming Kids to Be Fat" by Sharon
Begley. This article explains how toxics are
turning little babies cells into fat cells
(adipose tissue) and making them overweight!
Who would have thought that's how we got fat
babies and toddlers! Our
Presenter Elizabeth
Saunders is the Environmental Health Legislative
Director for Clean
Water Action where she has worked on toxics
campaigns for seven years. In that time she
has given countless presentations on toxic
chemicals, led the efforts of the Alliance for a
Healthy Tomorrow to pass the Massachusetts Mercury
Products Bill, and acted as a lobbyist, media
liason, coalition coordinator, and grassroots
organizer.

NEWS FROM THE ANNUAL
FALL KICK-OFF
|
Our Annual Fall Kick-Off had a good turn out
with the people attending learning a great deal
about the problems facing reformers of our
nation's health care system in Washington,
D.C. Currently, there are three different
bills out before the house and senate, each with
different parts and inner workings. Rhondda Tewes
from the Cape Cod area League of Women Voters is a
member of the national health care task force for
the LWV United States and currently serves as the
author of two separate research papers intened to
educate the heath care consumer. Her speaking
session was educational, helpful, and inspiring to
those who believed that the system is
all politically controlled. Click
here to learn more. Great food was
served, several prospective members attended, and
we thank member Steve Greffenius for the use of
his home. back

NATIONAL & STATE
LWV NEWS
|
At
the National Level - The League believes
that quality, affordable health care should be
available to all U.S. residents. Other U.S. health
care policy goals should include the equitable
distribution of services, efficient and economical
delivery of care, advancement of medical research
and technology, and a reasonable total national
expenditure level for health care.
Furthermore, the League believes that all
Americans should have access to a basic level of
care that includes the prevention of disease,
health promotion and education, primary care
(including prenatal and reproductive health),
acute care, long-term care and mental health
care.

At the State Level - As
LWVMA approaches its 90th birthday on May 27,
2010, its goal for Phonathon this year is to raise
$90,000 in donations- $1,000 dollars for every
year the League has been defending democracy in
the Commonwealth. Please contribute what you
can when you receive a call or donate
online.
